College roundup: Mercer’s 2 goals ignite Clarkson past SU in women’s hockey

SYRACUSE — A two-goal effort from senior captain Carly Mercer helped the No. 3 Clarkson University women’s hockey team to a 2-1 win over Syracuse in a nonconference game on Friday.

The victory was the 200th in the history of the Clarkson program, which started in 2003.

Clarkson (4-0) will host the Orange (1-2) at 4 p.m. today at Cheel Arena.

BOSTON COLLEGE 5, ST. LAWRENCE 2

Haley Skarupa scored three goals to lead the No. 2 Eagles (2-0) past St. Lawrence University in a nonconference game in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Andie Anastos and Taylor Wasylk also scored for Boston College.

Abbey McRae and Mel Desrochers scored for the Saints (1-4).

MEN’S SOCCER

SUNY POTSDAM 3, SUNY NEW PALTZ 1

SUNY Potsdam scored three goals in the second half to defeat the Hawks (3-8-2, 2-3-0) in a SUNYAC game in New Paltz.

Alex Minsker, Alessio Vitale and Ben Firlit scored for the Bears (7-5-1, 1-2-1). Sam Spring scored for the Hawks.

SKIDMORE 2, CLARKSON 1

Brock Bakewell scored two goals in the second half to lead Skidmore (8-4-2, 2-1-1) past the Golden Knights in a Liberty League game in Saratoga Springs.

Trevor Blackwell scored in the first half for Clarkson (2-9, 0-4).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

SUNY POTSDAM 1, SUNY NEW PALTZ 0 (OT)

Hailey Hollenbeck scored an overtime goal in the 99th minute to lead the Bears past SUNY New Paltz (2-8-3, 2-3-0) in a SUNYAC game in Potsdam.

Michaela Cole finished with eight saves for the Bears (5-6-1, 1-2-1).

FIELD HOCKEY

UNION 6, ST. LAWRENCE 5

Nicole Merligliano scored four straight goals to help Union (4-8, 1-2) recover from an early 3-0 deficit in a Liberty League win over the Saints in Schenectady.

Maggie Ferrari and Allison Troy also scored for Union. Ali Ferenczy scored one goal with two assists to lead the Saints (3-7, 1-2).

Kate Higgins, Lizzy Saward and Grace O’Neil also scored for SLU.

VOLLEYBALL

SUNY POTSDAM 3, SUNY GENESEO 0

Liza Fields and Sharon Ofori each produced six kills to lead the Bears (12-10, 4-0) to a 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 sweep of SUNY Geneseo in a SUNYAC game in Potsdam.

Lauren Manzo added 12 assists and Jenna Blujus tallied 11 for SUNY Potsdam.

CLARKSON DROPS TWO

The Golden Knights (17-6) faced a pair of top-10 teams in the opening day of the Mid-West Classic in Holland, Mich., and lost both matches in three games.

Hope, which is ranked No. 2, defeated Clarkson 25-19, 25-17, 25-16, and No. 6 Elmhurst swept the Golden Knights 26-24, 25-23, 25-20.

Lani Durio led Clarkson with 25 assists against Hope.
