State: $3 mil project at Cape Correctional will replace deteriorating roofs

CAPE VINCENT — A multimillion-dollar, state-funded project planned for the Cape Vincent Correctional Facility on Route 12E will replace deteriorating roofs and provide extra insulation, according to the state Office of General Services.

“The project was initiated because the metal roof panels on buildings have reached their life expectancy. Roofs are deteriorating and some have pinholes developing,” said OGS spokeswoman Heather Groll in an email to the Times.

She said the project — estimated to cost between $2 million and $3 million — will include the removal and replacement of all standing-seam painted galvanized steel metal roofing on the buildings, addition of a layer of rigid roof insulation, reconfiguration of the entrance canopies on buildings and metal siding replacement in some areas of the correctional facility.

Additionally, the project calls for masonry repointing and paving reconfiguration near the canopies and some asbestos abatement due to degrading sealants in Cape Vincent Correctional Facility’s roof system.

The state office will accept bids from contractors for the roof replacement project until 2 p.m. Nov. 6 and plans to open them that day.

Once the state Comptroller’s Office gives the project the green light, contractors will be given 450 days to complete the work, Ms. Groll said.

The OGS is asking firms interested in the project to acquire bid documents by calling 518-474-0203 or by visiting
