WATSON A log home in the town of Watson was damaged by fire late Tuesday afternoon.
Lowville firefighters shortly after 5 p.m. were called to 6579 River Road in the town of Watson and requested mutual aid from New Bremen and Croghan firefighters.
There was a lot of fire damage on the first floor, Lowville Fire Chief Timothy N. Bush said.
The home also sustained heavy smoke and water damage, but there appeared to be no structural damage to the home, he said.
Firefighters cut a hole in the roof to ensure that the blaze was completely extinguished.
The residence was owned by Mary A. Konkol, who died last month, and her nephew, John Konkol, Alexandria Bay, was given the property in her will, fire officials said.
Mr. Konkol for the past couple of days had been working on the home, blowing insulation into the attic, but nobody was there when the fire broke out, Mr. Bush said.
The blaze appears to have started in the attic, but the cause remains under investigation, he said.
Lewis County Search and Rescue and National Grid officials responded to the scene.
