POTSDAM - SUNY Potsdam assistant men’s basketball coach Stan Cohen has stood the test of time as a mainstay fixture on the sidelines, teaching and mentoring student-athletes for 40 years at Potsdam.

It was announced Tuesday that Cohen will be the among latest class inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame during the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Basketball Tournament the weekend of March 14-16 in Glens Falls for the 2014 class.

Cohen’s portfolio is long and distinguished with a 691-423 career record (.620 winning percentage).Along with it, he was an influence for both NCAA Division III National Championship teams (1981, 1986) and three NCAA Division National Runner-up finishes (1979, 1982, and 1985).

Long-term success also included nine NCAA East Regional Championships (‘79-’83, ‘85’-’87, ‘89) and 10 SUNYAC Men’s Basketball Championships (‘74, ‘77-’80, ‘83, ‘86, ‘87, 2004-5).

During a stretch from November 22, 1985 to March 14, 1987, the Bears went on a 60-game winning streak.Cohen was there for that too.

“He brings an energy and passion everyday,” said SUNY Potsdam men’s head basketball coach Sherry Dobbs. “He comes into the gym and he’s ready to go and has great relationships with the guys on our team.He can communicate with them and they can look to him as a father figure. He’s spanned 40 years of Potsdam basketball teams. When you talk to an alum, he resonates with them.”

Known for his attention to work ethic, Cohen has stressed the importance of running the floor, getting back on defense and hitting the glass for rebounds.

“It’s all those things that really help you win basketball games,” said coach Dobbs.

In his stead, Cohen helped coach eight All-Americans (five two-time All-Americans) and three National Players of the Year.During that time, the Bears made 15 NCAA appearances and racked up a 35-13 record.

His basketball experience goes beyond that with another 16 seasons as head men’s basketball coach with SUNY Canton (247-143 record) and seven additional seasons as the head women’s basketball coach (79-57 record).

For his efforts, Cohen is already an elected member of both the SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam Hall of Fame.

A graduate of Hobart College, Coach Cohen served as co-captain of the 1955-56 men’s basketball team. His team finished then with the best win-loss percentage of any team in the history of Hobart basketball.
