A fire destroyed a home and shed in the Town of Oswegatchie Friday.
Through thick clouds of smoke made worse by wind, emergency crews from Heuvelton, Ogdensburg, Lisbon, and Morristown battled flames that engulfed a house at 1206 Moreland Road shortly after 1 p.m.
Fire officials said the fire started in the kitchen, but the exact cause of incident is still undetermined. An investigation is still ongoing, Heuvelton Fire Chief Mark Basford said.
It was a total loss, Mr. Basford said. It was very advanced when we got there. The crews did a great job and no one was hurt.
The home is listed as belonging to Gary J. Brabant and was occupied by a family of five.
Stacy Snyder, a resident of the home, said she was shopping at Kinney Drugs, Ogdensburg, during the fire, but her daughter, Taylor TeRiele, 20, was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom when she was awakened by heavy smoke and flames.
Ms. TeRiele helped rescued several family pets before escaping the flames.
Demolition teams leveled the debris once the fire was put out shortly before 4 p.m.
The Red Cross has been notified of the familys loss, according to officials.
