Second man charged with assaulting Clarkson University lacrosse player pleads not guilty

CANTON — The second St. Lawrence man alleged to have beaten a Clarkson University lacrosse player in August pleaded not guilty Friday in St. Lawrence County Court.

Bryan A. Bicknell, 20, of 342 West Parishville Road, Parishville, was indicted for second-degree criminal assault in connection with the Aug. 24 assault of 21-year-old Donald J. W. Whelley.

It is alleged that Mr. Bicknell and Dakota J. Vallance, 18, of 399 Buckton Road, Winthrop, attacked Mr. Whelley at 1:52 a.m. Aug. 24 on Maple Street in the village of Potsdam, leaving him in front of the former Honda dealership with “countless fractures and dislocating his face” after “striking him repeatedly about the head,” according to an indictment handed up by a St. Lawrence County grand jury on Oct. 1.

Mr. Whelley required facial reconstructive surgery for his injuries from the attack.

Vallance pleaded not guilty to the same charge on Tuesday.

Both men were released under probation supervision.
