POTSDAM - Each October, health care facilities recognize and celebrate those dedicated spiritual caregivers who share their time, love and faith with the community through their ministries.

This year, Oct. 20 – 26 has been designated Spiritual Care Week and Canton-Potsdam Hospital is marking the weeklong celebration with a special luncheon for its Spiritual Care volunteers and an ice cream social for the staff and Spiritual Care Team on Friday.

Spiritual Care Week, first observed in 1985, has grown into an international celebration honoring the ministry performed by chaplains and Spiritual care counselors in hospitals, nursing homes, mental health facilities and in visits to the homebound. The event also provides a forum for the clergy to express their appreciation to institutions and their staff for supporting Spiritual care ministries, as well as share their story and celebrate their ministries.

The volunteer chaplaincy team is made up of dedicated volunteer clergy from many religious organizations. They are available to bring faith, hope and comfort to any CPH patient or family member who requests their support.

“We are committed to providing excellent care for every patient, including spiritual care,” President and Chief Executive Officer David B. Acker said.

“Spiritual Care Week is an opportunity for us to recognize the commitment of our volunteer chaplains and thank them for bringing spiritual care to our patients.”
