Deer slams into side of packed school bus, sending two South Jefferson students to hospital

ADAMS — A deer jumping across Route 11 smacked into the side of a packed school bus Thursday afternoon, causing two South Jefferson students to be injured as the bus driver slammed on the brakes.

Two girls on the bus, one from the high school and one elementary pupil, were taken to Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, with minor bumps and bruises, Superintendent Jamie A. Moesel said. Their names were not released. A nursing supervisor said Monday night the students had not been admitted.

The bus was carrying 45 to 50 students about 3:30 p.m. when the deer bolted out of the woods near the village water tower. The bus, slightly damaged, dropped the children off at the nearby fire hall, where two South Jefferson Rescue Squad ambulances and a school nurse responded, Adams Fire Chief Brian S. Berkey said. Parents were contacted, and students were put on another bus.

“The bus driver put on the brakes really quick, but the bus didn’t lose control or go sideways,” Chief Berkey said. The deer then was struck by a second vehicle, which received front-end damage. The animal was killed.

The bus driver, who was not identified, “did an excellent job calming the kids down and getting help,” he said.
