Hammond town clerk hopes to be elected to her fifth term

HAMMOND - Incumbent Darlene V. Amyot will face Republican newcomer Robyn L. Gilmer in a race for Town Clerk this November.

Mrs. Amyot, who has a master’s degree in English education and served as substitute English teacher at Alexandria Bay and Hammond Central School, said she has developed a great rapport with the public over the last eight years as town clerk.

“I think the public feels that I am doing a good job then they will continue to support me,” Mrs. Amyot said. “When you are elected to office you become public servant, you have to be available as much as you can. I strive to that end.”

She said she has never had a problem with the board members, as well.

“I have worked with many local, state, and federal government officials over the years to the point that the funeral director is more than likely to come to my house on Sunday morning,” she said.

Answering Ms. Gilmer’s recent comments about her availability, Mrs. Amyot said she always strives to make herself available to the public.

“Our hours have been the same for over 40 years,” Mrs. Amyot said. “I don’t close at lunch time like other clerks do, so I am giving the town an hour every day.”

The office is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 to 4 p.m.

She said the office has a drop box for tax payments to be deposited when the library is open late twice a week. She said she has developed a great relationship with the townspeople during her four terms in office.

“I try to be helpful to people as often as I can,” she said. “If seniors are having trouble with their tax bills, they can bring them in by piecemeal. I have developed a kind of relationship with community where they know they can call home and do so.”
