Elma R. Pickel


Carthage- Elma R. Pickel, 94, formerly of 104 Bridge St., West Carthage, passed away on Friday, October 25, 2013, in the Country Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Elma was born in North Wilna on May 7, 1919, the daughter of the late Ralph J. and Rose Mary Wilcox Jones. She attended Carthage and Augustinan Academy Schools. She married Harry L. Pickel on October 5, 1940 at St. James Church, Carthage with the Rev. Charles Grady officiating. Mr. Pickel died on February 20, 2010.

Elma was a beautician, having graduated from Chrishelle’s School of Cosmetology in Watertown. She operated Elma’s Beauty Shop at her home in West Carthage for 20 years. She loved to paint and was very artistic. Her painting “In Grandma’s Day” was selected for an exhibition, “Art of the Heart” at the Albany Institute of History and Art.

She is survived by three daughters and their spouses: Marilyn and Tim O”Connor of West Carthage, Kathleen and Fred Cummings of Junction City, KY and Barbara and A. Wayne Williams of Sackets Harbor, two sons: Harry L. Pickel Jr. of Glenfield and Raymond and Alice Pickel of Croghan, several Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, one sister: Alice Young of Pamelia and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a daughter, Jean Elizabeth, a brother, Norman W. Jones and her twin sister, Thelma May Jones.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. George F. Maroun, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in the Black River Cemetery. There will be no calling Hours. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.
