BRASHER FALLS – Mr. Oscar C. King, formerly of 1025 County Route 50, passed away Sunday afternoon, October 27, 2013 at the Highland Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since November 2008.

Oscar was born October 27, 1931 in Malone, the son of the late Edgar and Lea Goyea King. He graduated from Franklin Academy, where he was active with the Future Farmers of America. On October 3, 1953, he married Marilyn C. Thomas at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church with Rev. Gerald Kellogg, officiating. She predeceased him on October 9, 2002. Oscar was drafted in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He entered the service on August 25, 1955, serving at Fort Dix, New Jersey, Fort Knox, Kentucky, and later 125th Infantry Division Recon Company in Hawaii. He was honorably discharged on January 16, 1957.

Oscar dedicated his life to farming, first teaching at Cornell University before working on a farm in Holly, New York. In 1962, he purchased his first farm in Elba, New York. He returned back to the North Country in 1974, when he purchased his farm in Brasher. After retiring from many years of farming, he worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart. Oscar was a member of the New York Holstein Association and the St. Lawrence County Farm Bureau. Along with farming, he was a cattle judge and enjoyed going to cattle shows. He was a people person and will be known for his wit and wonderful sense of humor.

Oscar is survived by his children, Thomas Oscar and Susan King of Bozrah, CT; Patricia and Dan Kopish of Oshkosh, WI; Paula and Lloyd Hurlbut, Jr. of Watertown; Pendra King and her fiancÚ, Stuart Legacy of Massena; and Timothy and Shelle King of Berlin, WI; many grandchildren; six sisters, Mae Schneeberger of Lowville; Lucy McDonald of Florida; Ethel Gerowe of Connecticut; Marie Johnston of Malone; Marjorie and Dave Johnston of Tennessee; and Eleanor and Bob Villandre of California; his brother, Norman and Marjorie King of Constable; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Tyler Paul King on August 12, 1985; a sister, Barbara McCormick; and a brother, Francis King.

Friends may call Wednesday 12-2 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where a celebration of Oscar’s life will be held at 2:00 PM with family friend, Ted Genagon sharing stories of Oscar. Burial will follow in Stevens Cemetery, Skerry, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that you send flowers to a loved one in his memory, signing the card with your name and “Oscar”.
