North American Tapes unveils plans to expand, projects abound at County Planning Board meeting

Plans for an 8,000-square-foot addition to the North American Tapes building on Fisher Road in the Jefferson County Industrial Park were unveiled during a county Planning Board meeting that was long on projects but short on members Tuesday afternoon.

The North American Tapes proposal would add a 40-foot-by-80-foot mill room to the northeast corner of the company’s manufacturing facility, which produces hockey and athletic tape.

The paved parking lot would be extended to make up for the space lost to the addition, and lights would be added to either side of the new structure, according to county Community Development Coordinator Jennifer L. Voss.

Only four board members attended the meeting, not enough to form a quorum. All projects presented were returned to their municipalities with Planning Department staff comments only.

Also presented during the meeting were plans to install a 12-foot-by-32-foot trailer that will serve as a donation location for the Syracuse-based charity Rescue Mission in the Plaza at Salmon Run near the West Marine store.

The trailer, which would be open and staffed seven days a week, would be solar powered and propane heated and would have an 8-foot dock on one side, according to Planning Department staff.

The facility would accept donations of clothing and other materials, according to two representatives of the charity who appeared before the town of Watertown Planning Board this month.

The installation of the trailer, which would require a Jefferson County building permit, was referred back to the town for final approval.

Town Planning Board members said at their last meeting that they would look favorably on the project.

County Planning Board members also reviewed suggested changes to a development law created by the town of Lorraine and several planned updates to the zoning law for the village of Sackets Harbor.

Also on the agenda were updated plans for a 5,820-square-foot Nice N Easy convenience store and gas station on Route 11 across from Walmart in the town of LeRay.

According to plans presented to the town last month, the store would have eight fuel pumps, a drive-through window and 23 parking spaces as well as a Mama Mia’s pizza bar and submarine sandwich counter.

The project was referred back to the town with staff comments.
