Dick’s Sporting Goods still on track for 2014 opening at St. Lawrence Centre

MASSENA - While construction for a Dick’s Sporting Goods store at St. Lawrence Central was expected to begin before now, mall officials say the store is still coming to the mall and should be open next year.

“We have a signed lease,” St. Lawrence Centre Marketing Manager Ronald J. Patnode said. “Dick’s Sporting Goods is still on track to open in 2014.”

Mr. Patnode said right now there are several things going on behind the scenes, with many of them taking longer than anticipated.

“Although construction on the project has not yet started, they are continuing to make progress,” he said. “As with all big projects, there are contingencies and due diligences that must be completed before construction begins.”

Some of those things include architectural work and engineering.

“Unfortunately these behind the scenes things are taking longer than we had originally anticipated,” Mr. Patnode said. “There’s a host of things that have to be taken care of, some you wouldn’t even think about.”

A news release from the mall in May announced that the sporting goods giant would be opening a Massena store in the spring of 2014.

With Mr. Patnode estimating approximately 20 weeks of construction, prior to the opening, a spring opening is still a possibility.

The announcement also included a statement from the president of the Carlyle Development Group, who own the mall.

“The addition of Dick’s Sporting Goods is merely the first step in our redevelopment plan to transform the property into a regional destination,” Abdi Mahamedi saidin May. “The addition of Dick’s should act as a catalyst to attract additional national, regional and local tenants alike. Our focus is on providing an updated shopping, entertainment and social experience for the region.”
