PIERREPONT - The Pierrepont Town Board will hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to review a tentative $1.9 million spending plan.
The town board approved the tentative $1,905,025 budget earlier this week after meeting behind closed doors for approximately 35 minutes. Town officials said the executive session was called to discuss personnel issues and questions on the budget that were unclear.
New York State Committee on Open Government Executive Director Robert J. Freeman said that discussion should have been held in public.
When theyre talking about the budget, theyre talking about policy. Even though employees might be affected, the discussion regarding the budget must be held in the public to comply with the law, Mr. Freeman said.
In response, Mr. Latimer said, We discussed more about personnel and they tried to discuss some of the budget issues as well. We will be having a public meeting in the upcoming few weeks though.
The budget lists appropriations of $570,822 for the general fund, $1,169,703 for the highway fund, $16,500 for the lighting district and $148,000 the fire districts in 2014.
The proposed salaries of elected officials in Pierrepont are as follows:
■ Supervisor $13,500
■ Councilmen (4 @ $4,662) $18,648
■ Town Clerk/Tax Collector $33,163
■ Justice $12,702
■ Highway Superintendent $60,658
The 2013 tax rate in Pierrepont for the general and highway funds was $4.22 per $1,000 of assessed value.
