Neighborhood Center now accepting Christmas applications

MASSENA - The Massena Neighborhood Center’s 2013 Christmas program, the largest in the Massena area, is under way with applications being taken between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday through Dec. 5 at the center’s office, 61 Beach Street.

Last year 464 families, including 649 children and 111 seniors, were served by this program; and those levels are expected to be met or exceeded this year.

The continued success of this program depends on the generosity of area businesses, individuals, schools, churches and scout troops. While it is expected that some of the items needed for our Christmas program may be donated, Jill Butler, who coordinates the Christmas program for the center, points out that cash is urgently needed as well. This money is used to purchase the turkeys, hams and other perishable items for the food boxes and for gift cards for the children.

Dependents under the age of 13 are also each provided a warm hat and mittens, toothbrush and toothpaste, and coloring or activity book with crayons or colored pencils. New hats and mittens, purchased or handmade, are needed for the children, from infants to teens.

All donations may be sent to or dropped off at the Massena Neighborhood Center, 61 Beach Street, Suite 103, Massena, NY 13662.

Once again, Massena elementary school students are making “Touch a Hand Touch a Heart” paper hands to be available for a small donation at local businesses, with all proceeds benefiting the needs of the children enrolled in the Christmas program.

In addition to Massena, the center’s service area extends into Brasher, North Lawrence, Louisville, Lawrenceville, Helena, Norfolk, Raymondville, Rooseveltown and parts of Chase Mills. It would be greatly appreciated if area businesses would consider supporting this effort by offering these paper hands to their customers. To participate in this project, or with questions, please call Jill Butler at (315) 769-3140.

Every year the Fund Raising Committee, which benefits the Massena Neighborhood Center, is amazed at the outpouring of public support for their Christmas program and feel fortunate to live in an area where people helping people is a number one priority.
