Champion tax rate decreased in proposed budget: hearing Monday night

WEST CARTHAGE — The Champion Town Council will have a public hearing on its proposed 2014 budget at 7:15 p.m. today at the town offices, 10 N. Broad St.

The $2,697,589 plan includes $1,016,099 to be raised by property taxes. This year’s $3,479,612 budget had a tax levy of $994,709.

The proposed tax rate for the fiscal year beginning Jan. 1 is $2.80 per $1,000 of assessed property value, 5 cents lower than this year’s $2.85 rate.

“We’re down a nickel due to the growth in the town and fiscal responsibility,” said Supervisor Terry L. Buckley. “We’ve budgeted more in the general fund and less in the highway, but more sales tax will go into the highway department and less in general. More money for the infrastructure allows us to get the roads in shape yet enables us to lower the tax rate.”

Salaries for village employees would be: supervisor, $17,000; four council members, $4,400 each; town clerk/tax collector, $33,800; and highway superintendent, $48,500.
