Adams voters approve borrowing for fire hall expansion

ADAMS — The village will move forward with borrowing up to $1.2 million for an expansion of the department’s fire hall, with votes approving the action 258-157.

Tuesday’s vote followed a successful petition to challenge the village’s Board of Trustees Aug. 19 decision to approve the borrowing.

Trustee and fire department member Philip F. Chatterton, who ran unopposed for mayor, said he was happy with the outcome, and the chance to take the expansion to bid.

“Now we have to forge ahead and find out what it’s going to cost,” he said.

He said he expected the bids to go out within the next two weeks, and the village to have estimates by December.

If the project costs end up being more than $1.2 million, Mr. Chatterton and other parties have said, the expansion will not proceed.

Supporters argued that the expansion would help the department grow in the future and increase safety, while opponents said the price tag was too high. However, the village Board of Trustees said that it had cut costs as much as possible, and that any delays would increase the project’s price.

“I was afraid if it was done later, it would be more expensive than it is now,” said Mayor Patricia A. Lamoree, formerly Ms. Sweetland. “The need is now, not later. We have too much investment in that fleet of vehicles, and they need to be protected.”
