Waddington could host another bass tourney

WADDINGTON — If you build it, they will come.

Riding on the coattails of the successful Bassmaster Elite Series tournament in August, another high-profile bass tournament might be coming to the village soon.

Mayor Janet M. Otto-Cassada said Monday the village is in talks with Bass Anglers Sportsman Society to host an Open series tournament. “It would be smaller than the Elite tournament, but it’s still a prestigious event,” Ms. Otto-Cassada said.

Ms. Otto-Cassada said she was not able to discuss the deal because it is still in the works.

“We’ve been meeting with officials, but no contract has been signed yet,” she said.

The Open series is a platform for amateur anglers to emerge as aspiring pros, and gives anglers a chance to advance to the Bassmaster Elite Series.

The effects of the Elite series event on businesses has not yet been released, but Ms. Otto-Cassada said the fact that another event is being scheduled within the same year is a good indicator of its success.

A total of 34,100 people turned out for the Aug. 8 to 11 Evan Williams Bourbon Showdown at St. Lawrence River, breaking a record for the 2013 season.

“This is another great event for our community,” Ms. Otto Cassada said.
