Song inspired by fallen Fort Drum soldier wins award (VIDEO)

FORT DRUM — A country music song inspired by the father of Sgt. 1st Class Jared C. Monti, a 10th Mountain Division soldier who died in 2006 and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2009, won the song of the year award at Wednesday night’s Country Music Association Awards.

The Lee Brice-performed song, “I Drive Your Truck,” was written by Connie Harrington and her two writing partners after hearing Sgt. Monti’s father, Paul, talk about his son on a National Public Radio program. Mr. Monti has driven his son’s Dodge Ram truck since his death, and in June he drove it to a ceremony on post honoring soldiers killed in 2012.

Sgt. Monti was a member of the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

Mr. Brice’s song about Sgt. Monti can be heard at The presentation of the award and the tribute to Sgt. Monti can be seen at
