Bell appointed director of Clarkson’s new Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

POTSDAM - Arthur H. Bell has been appointed professor of English and director of the new Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Clarkson University.

The Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning serves faculty, staff, and graduate assistants involved in creating and delivering interesting, cutting-edge instruction that engages all in the classroom. The center achieves its goals through teaching workshops, class visits and follow-up consultation, guest presentations, and assistance with curricular design.

Before coming to Clarkson, Bell held administrative posts with the University of San Francisco. He served as chair of the Department of Organization, Leadership, and Communication; professor of management communication in the School of Management; and co-chair of the graduate program committee in the Masagung Graduate School of Management. He was previously executive director of the MBA programs.

While at the University of San Francisco, Bell traveled to Hong Kong to serve as visiting professor of management and assistant dean for special projects at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology School of Business and Management

He also had a simultaneous appointment as research professor in the Naval Postgraduate School Department of Information Sciences.

Prior to joining the University of San Francisco, Bell served as associate professor of English and technical communication at Old Dominion University, senior lecturer in English and business at Georgetown University, clinical professor of business communication at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business, and professor of English and director of business communication at California State University, Fullerton.

His academic recognition includes the Full Professor Faculty Teaching Award, Mission Advancement Award, and Outstanding Research Award, at the University of San Francisco, and the Business Professor Award at the University of Southern California.

He has earned recognition as a highly successful grant writer, helping win awards of $36 million for the University of California San Francisco Cancer Center and $40 million for the eight Hong Kong universities.

A prolific writer, he is the author or co-author of 52 books as well as many articles, columns, reviews, and journal pieces. His most recent books include Ultimate Speed Reading, Intercultural Business and Why Should I? Ten Keys to Motivating People.

Bell has served as a consultant for many organizations, including Sun Microsystems, Apple Computer, StarKist, Santa Fe Railway, Wells Fargo, Deutsche Telekom, the U.S. Navy, Citicorp, British Telecom, Charles Schwab, and the U.S. State Department.

He is an editorial board member of Journal of Entrepreneurship and Organizational Management; a board member of SNP Communications, San Francisco; an advisory board member of Adventure for Life; and founder of the English Language Leaders Conference.

Bell is also a jazz pianist and has published three collections of original jazz ballads.

He received a bachelor of arts degree in English from Concordia University, a master of arts degree in English from the University of Southern California, and both a master of arts degree and Ph.D. in English from Harvard University.
