Historical society to restore Martinsburg schoolhouse with help from Pratt-Northam Foundation

MARTINSBURG — The Martinsburg Historical Society is planning to refurbish an old one-room schoolhouse on Ramos Road, with assistance from the Pratt-Northam Foundation.

“The plan is to restore the building to 1940s and 1950s era,” said Nelson K. Schwartzentruber, the society’s president.

The old school, which closed in 1958, was purchased by the historical society earlier this year, and volunteers have since cleaned out the building and painted the roof, with plans to repaint the interior and exterior of the structure, he said.

The Pratt-Northam Foundation recently awarded a $2,500 grant to assist with the effort.

Historical Society member Hamish Davey estimated that the entire restoration project would cost around $6,000 to complete, although it would be much more than that without the volunteer labor.

“We still have a lot of volunteers,” he said.

Pratt-Northam Foundation trustee Roy Hammecker, also a member of the Lyons Falls History Association, said projects like the one at the schoolhouse are important as a way of preserving pieces of the area’s history that “aren’t going to be here forever.”
