A city resident is warning the community about a phone scam targeting those who owe back taxes.
Thomas C. Ladouceur said he received a phone call at 3 p.m. Monday from a man claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service. The unidentified man told Mr. Ladouceur that he owed money for back taxes and he would go to jail if he didnt pay up.
Mr. Ladouceur, who said he is currently on a payment plan with the IRS for past due taxes, took the call seriously.
He told me that the payments I had made were not correct and that I was in serious trouble with the IRS, he said. He seemed to know my situation and said I had to pay $400.
Mr. Ladouceur, a retired corrections officer and veteran, said he was tipped off to the potential for a scam when the caller told him he would be arrested on three warrants for three felonies if he didnt pay the $400 right away.
Thats when I hung up the phone and knew something wasnt quite right, he said. I know that $400 is not going to erase three arrest warrants.
But Mr. Ladouceur was still concerned about his account, so he called the IRS the next day.
The IRS rep told me this is happening more and more, he said. The caller knew to call on a holiday when the IRS workers would not be there to answer the phone.
Mr. Ladouceur said the caller had an Asian accent.
I wanted to warn people about this, he said. The thing is – they didnt ask for money, they demanded it. Someone might be vulnerable or intimidated enough to give them that money. Everyone knows not to mess with the IRS.
