The unofficial tally of absentee ballots from hotly contested races in the town of Cape Vincent may be delayed by at least three days due to a large number of challenges, according to Board of Elections officials.

Huddled around a table in the Jefferson County Board of Elections office, members of both the Democratic and Republican parties are inspecting ballots cast in races for town supervisor and two town council seats and raising numerous challenges to both ballots and envelopes.

Out of the 245 ballots returned to the board offices in Cape Vincent election district 2, only about 160 were left unchallenged, according to Republican Election Commissioner Jerry O. Eaton.

In election district 1, 62 absentee ballots were returned. Mr. Eaton said he did not know how many ballots had been challenged for that district.

According to unofficial results for the town supervisor race from last Tuesday’s election, Democratic challenger Alan N. Wood was leading Republican incumbent Urban C. Hirschey 501-426.

For the two town council seats, Democrat Paul Aubertine led a pack of four candidates with 542 votes, followed by Democrat Dennis W. Pearson, who is also running on the Advocates for Good Government line. Mr. Pearson garnered 497 votes.

Republicans Brooks J. Bragdon and Michelle T. Oswald are in third and fourth place, respectively, with 406 and 386 votes.
