CANTON Joel Lowry scored a pair of power-play goals in the first period to spark Cornell Universitys mens hockey team past St. Lawrence, 5-2 on Saturday night in an ECAC Hockey game at Appleton Arena.
Brian Ferlin also scored two goals for the Big Red (4-3-1, 2-3-1), who salvaged a weekend split in their north country trip.
Cornell erupted for four goals in the first period, including three within in a span of four shots, to take command.
Goalie Andy Iles made 22 saves to earn the win for the Big Red.
Greg Carey scored a power-play goal in the first period for St. Lawrence (6-4-2, 2-2-2) and Sean McGovern scored on a breakaway in the second period to tally his first collegiate goal.
Matt Weninger yielded three goals on five shots faced in the first 11 1/2 minutes before he was replaced in by Tyler Parks for the Saints. St. Lawrence dropped both games at home this weekend after going unbeaten (2-0-2) in their first four league outings of the season, both on the road.
