OGDENSBURG — The Ogdensburg Salvation Army’s annual Christmas sign-ups for food and toys begins this week.

The sign-ups will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, with a final deadline of Dec. 6 at the agency’s headquarters at 401 Franklin St.

Capt. Angela S. Shaffer said the Ogdensburg branch annually serves about 120 families from Ogdensburg, Lisbon, Morristown and Heuvelton.

It is a client list that shows no sign of getting any shorter, she said.

“There is always a need, especially for toys,” Mrs. Shaffer said.

The program is income-eligible. Those who apply must present two recent pay stubs, a St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services budget, child support documents, a list of expenses and Social Security cards or benefit cards for proof of family in household.

All applicants are asked to submit a list of at least three wish list items and clothing sizes for each child.

The age cutoff is 12 years. No teenagers are eligible, especially because of toys.

“They’re tough to buy for,” Mrs. Shaffer said. “They want (video) games. They don’t want the basic toys.”

The food and toys will be obtained by the Ogdensburg Neighborhood Center and Toys for Tots, and will be distributed at the Salvation Army on Dec. 19.

For more information or to arrange for evening sign-ups, call the Salvation Army at 393-3351.
