Legislators elect take tour of Lewis County departments

LOWVILLE — Four of six newly elected Lewis County Legislators toured the county’s courthouse, as well as Office for the Aging, Board of Elections, and Social Services Departments on Monday afternoon, as part of an orientation for new legislators.

Gregory M. Kulzer, Andrea J. Moroughan, Richard A. Chartrand and Lawrence L. Dolhof took the tour provided by Legislator Craig P. Brennan, R-Denmark, as Legislative Chairman Michael A. Tabolt, R-Croghan, was out of town due to a death in the family.

Previous obligations prevented Neil H. Pepper and Bryan D. Moser from attending.

“It was really informative,” Mr. Kulzer said of visiting the county departments.

Mrs. Moroughan said, “I found it very interesting. It gave me a lot to think about.”

One thing the group can think about is the different committees they will be assigned to come January.

While the chairman will make the ultimate decisions, legislators will put in requests for areas they prefer or have expertise in.

Following the tour, the group attended an informational reception at the Andover House to learn about the economic and social impact of the lack of affordable housing in the county.

Rev. Herb Swanson, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Lowville, Cheryl L. Shenkle-O’Neill, executive director of Snow Belt Housing Co. Inc., and Maureen P. Cean, Director of Program Development and Contracts at Transitional Living Services of Northern New York spoke with the group about the challenges faced by individuals, as well as agencies attempting to address the issues of homelessness and affordable housing in Lewis County.
