STAR LAKE The Clifton-Fine Central Board of Education intends to appoint two district residents to fill vacancies on the board after interviewing prospective candidates.
The board has decided to appoint rather than have a special election, leave the spots vacant, or have St. Lawrence-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services Superintendent Thomas R. Burns fill the vacancies.
The appointments which could be made as early as the boards next meeting, at 6 p.m. Dec. 16 will remain in place until after residents vote in May on the budget and board candidates. The appointments actually help address the vacancies quicker, board President Jeremy E. Thompson said. I think we agreed this was the best option.
The vacancies were created when Mary L. Fraser and Daniel E. Kerr II resigned, leaving five members on the board.
The board is asking residents who want to be appointed for letters of interest. The board hopes to interview candidates at its next meeting in open session, with each person asked the same set of questions, focusing on why they want to serve.
The board may then have an executive session and ideally appoint members that night, while reserving the right to reject all candidates, Mr. Thompson said.
Board members are particularly interested in candidates with relevant experience.
The majority of the board is new and Superintendent Regina C. Yeo is less than a year into her first superintendents job.
Admittedly, we are a green, young board, Mr. Thompson said.
