HEUVELTON - Nearly 30 students gathered on Wednesday afternoon in the Heuvelton Central School cafeteria with gloves on their hands ready to bake pies.

Fifty-seven various fruit pies were made by members of the Heuvelton Leo Club and donated to the Heuvelton Food Pantry, where they will be frozen and distributed throughout the holiday season.

Pies for the Pantry is an annual tradition for the Leos, said adviser Nancy J. LaFaver, that sees students coming together to help the community.

For most students this was their first time baking pies with the Leo Club, and Mrs. LaFaver and several volunteers from the community were on-hand to guide the process.

Terri L. Persons, with the Heuvelton Food Pantry, stopped by on Wednesday to lend her hand in the baking process and said the tradition, which started four years ago, helps the pantry offer more variety to people in need.

The pantry at the Heuvelton Methodist Church helps feed anywhere from 30 to 40 families each month, Mrs. Persons said.

With so many students pitching in to help out, Mrs. Persons said, it’s an impressive feat that they’re able to be so organized and get so many pies made in just over an hour. The Leo Club worked on the pies from 3 to 4 p.m.

Mrs. LaFaver paired up the student bakers and encouraged them to add a personal touch to their pie crusts by pinching the edges in a unique pattern or using a fork to add indentations. After the pies were finished students wrapped them in aluminum foil to prepare them for the freezer.
