PLATTSBURGH - Burying six 3-pointers, Cara Manfredi (Glastonbury, CT) scored a tournament-high 30 points as the Clarkson University womens basketball team posted its largest victory in 30 games with a 76-44 victory over Morrisville State in the consolation game of the Hampton Inn/Microtel Cardinal Classic on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Knights improved to 3-2 on the season and will face Potsdam State following the Thanksgiving holiday, hosting the Bears on Tuesday, December 3rd. Morrisville State fell to 1-3.
The Mustangs scored the first basket of the game, but Clarkson went on a 13-0 run in the next four minutes and never looked back. Though the lead briefly fell below double digits, Clarkson would slowly expand its advantage and held a 16-point edge at the half. Morrisville again scored the opening points in the second period, but the Knights again went on a 16-1 run and pushed the lead to 29. Morrisville ended that run, but had no answer for the Knights. Clarkson doubled up the Mustangs and was up by 40 before the lead finally fell to a still impressive 32 points, the Green and Golds largest win since a 71-point swing against Bard College on Senior Day 2012.
Manfredi tossed in 30 points in just 26 minutes, shooting 10-18 from the floor and 6-12 from beyond the point arc, and added in six rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Ashley Loggins (Albany, NY) recorded another double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, including 10 boards on the offensive end. The Knights were able to get many second chances with 27 offensive rebounds in the game. Junior Brooke Butkovsky (Monroe, CT), fresh off a string with the Clarkson Volleyball team at the NCAA National Quarterfinals, adapted quickly to her winter sport, scoring seven points and grabbing 10 rebounds in just 18 minutes.
For the Mustangs, Danielle Ooms had 13 points, going 4-6 from the field and 3-4 from beyond the 3-point arc, and Jennel Paul added in 10 points.
