FORT COVINGTON - The Canton Central girls hockey team opened the 2013-14 season by pulling away to a 5-1 win on the road over Section 10 rival Salmon River on Tuesday.
The game was tied at 1-1 heading into the first intermission before the Lady Bears fashioned a pair of unanswered goals in each of the next two frames.
Senior Margret Troiano opened the scoring just 16 seconds into the game when she finished off a play set up by sophomore Natalie Giglio but the Lady Shamrocks countered just over two minutes later when Nidia Dearmerya converted off an assist from Mallory Johnson.
Back-to-back goals by Giglio just over four minutes apart late in the second period proved to be the difference in the game. She connected for the eventual game-winner from Paige Glascow and Mary Kait Mace at the 8:03 mark then made it 3-1 assisted by Mace and Mimi Husinec.
Husinec, a freshman, added to the lead just 1:11 into the third period with Giglio and Troiano combining to earn assists. Troiano then closed out the scoring with 3:20 remaining on the third assist of the game for Mace.
Freshman Elizabeth Burke turned aside five shots backstopping the win while Becca Leroux worked the Salmon River crease for 38 saves.
The Lady Bears are slated to play in Oswego next Tuesday while the Lady Shamrocks travel to Saranac Lake on Monday.
For the first time in the short history of high school girls hockey, this season will conclude with a tournament sanctioned by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. The inaugural state tournament is slated for Alexandria Bay in early February where six sections competing in four regular season divisions will be represented.
Canton and Salmon River will compete in Section 10 along with Massena, Potsdam and St. Lawrence. The other divisions consist of - Alexandria Bay, Ithaca, Oswego and Skaneateles; Albany, Beekmantown, Lake Placid and Saranac Lake; and six teams from Section 6 (Buffalo-area).
