Potsdam retailers spread out holiday deals

POTSDAM — Rather than putting all their eggs in the Black Friday basket, Potsdam retailers are rolling out special deals for Potsdam’s holiday shopping weekend on Dec. 7 and 8 as well as Small Business Saturday today.

“Some of them do both, it all depends,” said Potsdam Chamber of Commerce Director Marylee E. Ballou.

Black Friday may see potential customers rushing off to the retail giants, or still traveling home from Thanksgiving festivities.

By spreading the deals and special events out over the shopping season, smaller businesses stand a better chance of bringing in more customers.

“Some of our merchants, especially the more specialty types of stops, have noticed over the years that a lot of people are out of town visiting family,” Ms. Ballou said.

So far, 27 businesses are participating in the town’s holiday shopping weekend with special deals and extended hours, including Northern Music and Video, 29 Market St.

The music shop is participating in both Black Friday and the holiday shopping weekend with their Super Music Sunday sale on Dec. 8.

“It’s nice to see the community rally around small business and participate in Black Friday locally,” said manager Christopher J. Smutz.

Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010 as a promotion for local shopping, and several Potsdam businesses have seen it as a way to draw in customers on the busiest shopping weekend of the year without as much competition from the big chain stores.

“There are some businesses here in town that have kind of jumped on that bandwagon for Small Business Saturday,” Ms. Ballou said.

Those who shop at participating businesses will get a chance to win a $50 or $100 Potsdam Chamber of Commerce gift card.

“We hope that people will come out and see all these local businesses and do some of their shopping locally for the holidays,” Ms. Ballou said.

The holiday shopping weekend coincides with other Potsdam Christmas mainstays like the “Merry TubaChristmas” concert at 5 p.m. on Dec. 7 in the United Methodist Church, 26 Main St.

The concert is free, but donations will be gathered for the Potsdam Neighborhood Center.

The concert will be followed by the village tree lighting near Ive’s Park.
