SUNY Canton unveils statue of former hockey coach Martin

CANTON — SUNY Canton honored Terry Martin, the former longtime coach of the men’s hockey team, on Saturday with a life-size bronze statue.

Martin coached the hockey team for 25 years, from 1974-99, and compiled a record of 527-211-29. The statue is located at the entryway to the college’s athletic facilities.

“What a humbling experience,” Martin said at the event. “But what a great day for my hockey family, my lacrosse family, my soccer family and all the faculty and staff here when I taught and coached.”

Martin also worked as the men’s athletic director at SUNY Canton and coached the women’s soccer and men’s lacrosse teams. He taught in the physical education department.

But Martin drew national notice with the hockey teams, which won 12 national titles under his watch.

SUNY Canton alum Richard Layo helped provide backing for the statue, including helping in the creation. Layo’s company, Dynamic International, provides die/mold machine solutions.
