EPA supports ‘Plan 2014’ regulation proposal for Lake Ontario, St. Lawrence River

In a recent letter to the International Joint Commission, Judith A. Enck, administrator for Region 2 of the federal Environmental Protection Agency, conveyed the agency’s support of the “Plan 2014” water regulation proposal for Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River.

“The binational Lake Ontario Lakewide Action & Management Plan (LAMP) recognizes that the current lake level regulation plan, Plan 1958D, does not consider environmental benefits and has significantly degraded Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River coastal wetlands and vital fish and wildlife populations,” Ms. Enck said in her Nov. 8 letter. “Plan 2014 will increase the diversity and functioning of 64,000 acres of coastal wetlands by allowing hydrologic conditions to support native wetland plant seed germination and growth.”

Upon review of Plan 2014, she said, the EPA concluded that the IJC’s latest proposal would provide “much of the same benefits as” its precursor Plan Bv7, which the federal agency deemed “the most environmentally preferable plan.
