GOUVERNEUR - Senior forward Samanntha Villnave tossed through a career-high 25 points and hauled in 13 rebounds on Wednesday as the Massena Central varsity girls basketball team opened the season with a 50-32 NAC Central Division win on the road over Gouverneur in the coaching debut of Justin Shope.
Devin Kelly came off the bench to contribute six points, four steals and four rebounds as the Lady Raiders worked their way to an 11-4 lead by the end of the first quarter before gradually pulling away from a 23-16 halftime advantage. Jessice Rode (10 rebounds), Jaylee Jones (3 rebounds, 2 assists) and Maeve Curran (4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals) all netted five points while Bailee Young produced four points, nine boards and seven assists.
Rebecca Bulsiekwicz paced the Lady Wildcats with 10 points and three steals. Alisha Way contributed eight points, nine rebounds and three assits while Danielle Bullock finished with seven points, seven boards and three steals.
in the other two NAC Central Division openers played on Wednesday, Canton downed St. Lawrence Central 72-51 and Franklin Academy beat OFA 62-38.
Canton 72, SLC 51: In Brasher Falls, the visiting Lady Bears broke open a close game with a 26-9 third-quarter surge that pushed their lead to 55-31 heading into the final frame.
Kali Frank led the Canton offense with a 22-point effort. Natalie DiSalvo tossed through another 15 points, including the lone three-pointer of the night for the Lady Bears, followed by Tori Daley with 11 and Katie Clemmer with eight.
Lindsey Thayer anchored the SLC cause with a game-high 23 points and 14 rebounds to go along with five steals and three rebounds. Chelsea Savage contributed 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Haleigh Agans chipped in eight points followed by Jenna Kesner with four, Bailee Gauthier with two and Breanna Evans with one.
The Lady Larries return to action next Wednesday at home against Central Division rival OFA starting with the JV contest at 5:30 p.m.
FA 62, OFA 38: In Malone, Rachel Lamica fired through 21 points followed by Meghan OConnor with 11 as the Lady Huskies ran out to a 23-8 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Meg Dodge led OFA with 10 points while Riley Luckie netted another eight.
At the Chamberlain Memorial Tournament hosted by Madrid-Waddington, Heuvelton claimed top honors with a 42-27 win over the host Yellowjackets in the title game while Lisbon gained consolation honors with a 44-30 decision over Edwards-Knox.
Paige McCormick led the way in the title game with a 23-point effort as the Lady Bulldogs worked their way to an 18-7 lead by the end of the first quarter then sealed the win by outscoring M-W 14-5 in the fourth. Alexis Weidner added nine poitns toward the winning effort.
Tess Knight paced M-W with 13 points followed by Taylor Marcellus with seven.
In the only NAC boys basketball matchup on Wednesday, Edwards-Knox posted a 62-40 West Division win over Hammond.
