Potsdam, Massena girls hockey teams notch shutout wins

The Potsdam Central and Massena Central girls hockey teams pulled away to shutout wins at their home rinks on Wednesday.

Potsdam 7, Saranac Lake 0: In their season debut at Pine Street Arena, the Lady Sandstoners struck for the first two goals just 13 seconds apart in the fourth minute and never looked back in downing the Red Storm.

Freshman Jayden Young got the only goal Potsdam would need at the 3:10 mark when she shoveled home the rebound of a shot from the top of the slot by sophomore Kalie Grant. Junior Kelsey Green also earned an assist on the play. Senior Megan Plumb made it 2-0 just 13 seconds later converting on a long rush up the left wing after taking lead pass from freshman Payton Warden. Sophomore Paige McCabe netted the third Potsdam goal at the 7:43 mark assisted by Green and Young.

Warden opened the second period by finishing off a play set up by freshman Emily Thomas and Grant at the 1:59 mark to push the lead to 4-0. Junior Kirstin Barkley, off an assist from senior Jenny Tardelli, and senior Ally Miller, unassisted, added late goals to make it 6-0 heading into the third period where Green closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal at 1:37.

Freshman Sidney Molnar went the first 25 minutes between the pipes for the Lady Sandstoners and handled the two shots she faced. Junior Allie Compeau came on to make another seven saves in preserving the shutout. Freshman Lindsay Reeve turned aside 31 shots for the Red Storm (1-1).

The Lady Sandstoners return to action on Friday when they head to Chazy to take on Section 7 powerhouse Beekmantown in a rematch of last year’s playoff tournament final.

Massena 5, Salmon River 0: In a Section 10 matchup at the Massena Arena, the Lady Raiders also relayed the momentum of a quick scoring burst early in the game into their second win to open the season.

Bailey Dillabough struck for the eventual game-winner at the 4:48 mark from Molly O’Connell and Bailey Thomas before Mia Jermano connected just 57 seconds later assisted by Thomas and Emily Wilmshurst.

Katie MacCuaig made it 3-0 at 9:42 of the second period with assists going to Chelsea Streeter and Shaunnessy LaClair. Maddy Mailhot scored the fourth Massena goal unassisted at the 11:30 mark of the middle frame before MacCuaig closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal in the final minute of regulation.

Maddi Dillabough made 10 saves backstopping the shutout while Becca Leroux stood tall working the Salmon River crease for 39 stops.

Massena returns to action on Friday at home against Section 3 rival Skaneateles starting at 7:15 p.m. while the Lady Shamrocks (0-2, 0-1) are slated to host Section 10 rival St. Lawrence Central on Monday at 6 p.m.
