The Department of Commerces Foreign Trade Zones has granted Jefferson Countys North American Tapes a Foreign Trade Zone status, which will allow the company to save money on import duties, placing it on a more level playing field with foreign competitors, according to U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-New York, and Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh.
Sen. Schumer and Mr. Owens made the announcement about the successful application Monday afternoon.
North American Tapes is the second largest hockey tape manufacturer in the world and competes with tape imports from Canada, Brazil and China, according to a news release about the designation.
The status will save the company about $13,000 a month in import duties for manufacturing materials, the release said, allowing the company to expand. In October, North American Tapes unveiled plans for an 8,000-square-foot addition to the companys manufacturing facility on Fisher Road in the Jefferson County Industrial Park.
