Double Trouble: Norfolk man learns helping out your mother in law can have serious consequences

PROPERTY DAMAGE ACCIDENT - NORFOLK - A Norfolk man’s effort to keep his mother in law out of trouble following a two-vehicle property damage accident at 8:35 p.m. Wednesday on South Main Street in the hamlet didn’t work out so well.

St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies charged Christopher G. Planty, 34, of 36 South Main St., Norfolk, with second-degree obstruction of governmental administration. His mother in law, Pauline S. Durand, 53, same address, was charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident and ticketed for following too closely and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Deputies said Durand was southbound on South Main Street when she failed to see Sylvia A. Despaw, 72, of 16 South Main St., Norfolk, making a right hand turn into a driveway, striking the passenger side of Ms. Despaw’s vehicle. Deputies allege Durand then exited her vehicle and fled the scene on foot. They said her son in law, Planty, initially told deputies he had been driving the vehicle at the time of the accident in an effort to keep his mother in law out of trouble.
