Snow predicted to continue through weekend

Nine days shy of the first day of winter, a lake effect storm on Wednesday and Thursday caused several north country schools to close or have early dismissal due to heavy snowfall.

The snow was expected to continue Thursday night in parts of Jefferson and Lewis counties, with up to 9 inches forecast.

And that’s not all: Forecasters say more snow will come this weekend.

“Once the lake effect band moves off on Friday night, the north country can breathe a sigh of relief until Saturday, when a whole new winter storm will hit,” said Buffalo-based National Weather Service meteorologist Dave Zaff.

Northern New York is expected to receive 3 to 4 inches of snow beginning Saturday afternoon. Mr. Zaff said the storm should wind down sometime on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the lake effect snow that started Tuesday night forced several schools to close or dismiss early in Jefferson and Lewis counties.

Belleville Henderson Central School, South Jefferson Central School, Howard G. Sackets Technical Center, Lowville Academy, South Lewis Central, Pulaski Academy and Central School and Sandy Creek Central School were closed Wednesday.

On Thursday, Belleville Henderson Central School closed early and cancelled evening activities. Watertown City School District, Carthage Central, General Brown Central, Indian River Central, Lyme Central, Sackets Harbor Central, and South Jefferson Central schools also cancelled evening activities.

Lewis County schools had two-hour delays including Beaver River, BOCES, and Copenhagen Central School. Later in the day Beaver River Central School, Copenhagen Central School, Lowville Academy & Central School closed early and cancelled after school activities.

Up-to-date listings of school closings are posted on the Times website, www.
