JCC students awarded book scholarships

Jefferson Community College students were awarded $1,250 in scholarships to purchase textbooks.

The five scholarships were awarded by Follett Higher Education Group as part of the All-USA Community College Academic Team program, which is presented by USA Today and Phi Theta Kappa and sponsored by Follett.

The scholarships of $250 each were presented to JCC students Brittany E. Tanner of Copenhagen, Lillian M. McCauley of Watertown, Song H. Choi of Evans Mills, SaRena A. Eves of Evans Mills and Annette C. Pedrogo of Fort Drum.

Pamela J. Dixon, public relations technical specialist, said the textbook scholarships were made possible by the designation of JCC student Belinda G. Jones, Fort Drum, to the 2013 All-USA Community College Academic Team in April. The team designation recognizes high-achieving two-year college students who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor, combined with leadership and service that extend their education beyond the classroom to benefit society.

“It was thanks to Belinda the students were eligible for this scholarship opportunity,” Mrs. Dixon said.

Ms. Jones was one of only 20 students selected from a pool of 1,800 nominations to earn the designation. She graduated from JCC in May with an associate degree in liberal arts-humanities and social sciences.

This is the first time the scholarship has been available to students at JCC.
