CANTON - St. Lawrence County Office of Emergency Services has announced the ban for all non-essential travel will be lifted at 6 p.m. Sunday after being in place since 5 p.m. Saturday.

Here is the latest release from county officials:

CANTON - The vehicle travel restriction will be lifted for St. Lawrence County as of 6 p.m. Sunday.

While the travel restrictions are being lifted, a State of Emergency is still in place within St. Lawrence County. The county Emergency Operation Center remains open.

Many areas of the county have been hit hard with damaging amounts of freezing rain, downed trees and power lines. This is especially true in the southern and southeast portion of the county. The winds, additional sleet and now plummeting temperatures are causing additional issues with the ice covered trees and power lines.

There are still over 3,000 National Grid customers without power in the county. A travel advisory is still recommended and motorists are asked to use caution and be aware of the utility workers and state DOT, town highway and village DPW workers trying to do their jobs. When you see them working alongside of the roadway, please move over.

Also the St. Lawrence County 911- Emergency Services Dispatch Center is handling hundreds of calls for service and to assist people in need and should not be burdened with calls for road conditions or other non-emergency questions.

Sheriff Kevin Wells asks that if you do not have to travel don’t and, if you do make sure your vehicle is sufficiently cleaned off and warmed up and allow sufficient time to reach your destination. Drive with caution and make sure family members know your destination and route of travel and check in upon your arrival at your destination. Please be observant and be prepared.
