National Grid, utility crews work to restore power as temperatures drop

POTSDAM - National Grid is reporting 1,546 customers remain without power this morning as crews continue work to udo the damage done by the weekend ice storm that wreaked havoc in southern St. Lawrence County.

The heaviest damage remains in the towns of Russell, where 586 of National Grid’s 901 customers remain without power, and the town of Clare, where 53 of 58 customers are without power. Power also remains out to a large number of National Grid customers in Macomb, Pitcairn and Rossie.

National Grid has an estimated restoration time of 11:30 p.m. tonight for most customers in the county, but say they are still assessing conditions in Pitcairn (105 customers without power) and Macomb (114).

St. Lawrence County Legislator Jason Clark, D-Norfolk, who has been sharing updates on the situation on his Facebook page since Saturday, said there was good news late Monday night for many county residents still without power.

“National Grid was able to locate a primary line that ran through a woodland area with 16 broken poles. It is unsafe to attend to them directly in the dark,” he said following a briefing update Monday night, “but they have everything ready that is necessary to address this situation first thing in the morning.

“This will mean that power should be restored to most of Russell and Clare tomorrow (Tuesday). That is not in any way a promise, 16 poles in the middle of the woods is a lot, but it is what has been relayed. There is another transmission issue that is also being worked on in the Richville/Dekalb areas. Hopefully most of those affected by existing outages will be able to enjoy their Christmas Eve dinners in the warmth of their own homes,” Mr. Clark wrote.
