GOUVERNEUR — A traffic stop Thursday by village police led to two arrests and the seizure of 15 pounds of marijuana.

Arrested were David J. Sawatis, 40, of 638 Donovan Road, Fort Covington, and Margaret “Maggie” P. Pyke-Mitchell, 37, of Cornwall, Ontario. Each was charged with first-degree criminal possession of marijuana.

Police allege that they stopped the vehicle, operated by Ms. Pike-Mitchell, for a cracked windshield on Route 11 in the village. After village police said they received conflicting stories by the two, they called in the St. Lawrence County Sheriff K-9 Unit for free air sniff resulting in the discovery of the marijuana inside what police are calling a “hidden compartment” in the vehicle.

Both were arraigned in Town Court and released on their own recognizance.
