Roland L. LaBrake

Roland L. LaBrake, age 90, was called home to his Heavenly Father on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 at United Helpers Nursing Home in Canton.

He was born Dec. 31, 1922 in Malone to William LaBrake and Rose Mae (Gokey) LaBrake.

Roland is survived by his loving wife, Amy (Wilson) of Canton. In his earlier life he was blessed with two sons, Jack (Deborah) Labrake of Brushton, and Jerry (Cathy) LaBrake of Malone and their three children, Kyle, Matthew and Deborah, and two great-grandchildren, Elijah and Adeline. Roland is also survived by a loving sister-in-law, Marie (Donald) LaBrake, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Donald and Floyd, and his sister Betty.

Roland served in World War II from 1943-1946, as a sergeant in the 313th Field Artillery. He marched from France through Germany and liberated captives held in war camps. He received four battle campaign medals with service decorations: American Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct and World War II Victor Medal.

Roland attended local schools in Malone. He was a proud member of the Malone Police Department for 16 years and also worked with J.O. Ballard’s and North Country Dress factory in Malone. His hobbies were versatile: he was a coin collector, loved philately (stamp collecting), taxidermy, fly tying, as well as hunting, and fishing, and the ‘Big One’ never got away. He was a former member of the Malone Archery Club and the American Legion Post 219.

Along with jewelry- making, his passion was crafting wood decor with his wife, Amy, a talented painter, creating and traveling together to craft-shows throughout the North Country.

There are no calling hours.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014 at 1 p.m. at St. Mary-Murphy-Wilcox Funeral Home.

Spring burial will take place in Notre Dame Cemetery at a future date.
