Lisbon begins preliminary work on Hepburn Library renovations

LISBON - The ball is rolling for a renovation project at the Hepburn Library but there’s no timeline yet and Town Supervisor James W. Armstrong said it could be a long way off.

At Tuesday’s year-end town council meeting, Mr. Armstrong said the town is hoping to contract with an engineering firm to do a cost analysis.

The building, which is more than 90 years old, is in need of repairs to the brick fašade, including having the mortar joints retouched.

Library Director Michelle A. McLagan estimated the project could run anywhere from $50,000 to $60,000.

Ms. McLagan said the town could see out state grants to help defray the cost.

Mr. Armstrong said the town council is hoping to get quotes from contractors so they can begin budgeting for the project.

“It’s just something that needs doing,” he said.

Former Town Councilor Alan D. Dailey, whose term expired on Wednesday, spoke at the meeting advising the town to put the renovation project towards the top of their priority list for 2014.

But Mr. Armstrong cautioned that the project could be a long way off still.

Mr. Armstrong said “it would be nice” to have the project wrapped up by the end of 2014 but said his time in government taught him not to expect quick action.

Ms. McLagan said the project has been discussed on-and-off for the past several years.
