Ogdensburg again seeking someone to run its Greenbelt concession


The city of Ogdensburg is again seeking someone to run its appliance-equipped concession stand in the Dobisky Visitors Center at 100 Riverside Ave.

A six-page request for proposal was posted Dec. 27 on the city website, promoting the enterprise as a “Business Opportunity, Seasonal Food Concession at a Beautiful Marina on the St. Lawrence River! The City is seeking a qualified individual/business to run the well-equipped concession stand, turn-key operation, located in the beautiful new Dobisky Visitors’ Center and City of Ogdensburg Municipal Marina/cruise dock, public park/boat launch, tennis, children’s play center, skateboard park, picnic and busy swimming pool area. A short walk from the two 110-unit apartment towers, the business districts, City Hall, Remington Museum, and Public Library.”

City Parks and Recreation Director Matthew J. Curatolo, who will oversee the concession, wants it open by spring.

“In order to take advantage of the boating and summer season, the concession would have to be up and running around the end of May or early June,” he said Friday.

The concession was built as part of the visitors center in 2007. It has had four tenants since, with Trevor Brunet’s Simplicity Cafe being the last one.

Mr. Brunet operated the concession from June 2012 until last September. He subsequently opened the Simplicity Restaurant in the Stonefence Resort on Route 37 in the town of Oswegatchie. He could not be reached for comment Friday.

Mr. Curatolo said proposals from prospective tenants will be given considerable latitude as far as hours of business are concerned, how many meals are served daily and being open seasonally as opposed to year-round.

“We are open to reviewing all proposals at this time,” he said. “I do think that the year-round venue is tough to make successful because of the decline in traffic down at the visitors center and the Greenbelt area during the winter months.”

That same flexibility, Mr. Curatolo added, will apply to rent and lease terms.

“The rent and the length of the lease are negotiable,” he said. “When the previous tenant had a year-long lease it was for the amount of $5,000 and he was to pay all water, sewer, electricity and gas bills.”

So will the fifth time be the charm?

“That’s a tough question to answer,” Mr. Curatolo said.
