Hammond Fire Banquet Hall “OKed”

HAMMOND – The town council has given the Hammond Fire Department the “OK” to begin construction on a banquet hall and community center.

The town council voted in favor of waiving the $1,000 building permit fee at a meeting Wednesday so that Hammond Fire Department could begin construction on the hall.

Waving the $1,000 building permit would mean the fire department would have enough funds available to begin construction in the spring, Hammond Fire Chief John B. Bass said in December.

The town council held off on waiving the fee until it received approval from the association of towns.

“The town board has the power to determine fees and waiver them as such by way of resolution,” council member Douglas E. Delosh said during the meeting. “The only thing is that we need to say is that there must be a reasonable basis for said exemption. And that’s why we said it will be providing a much needed venue.”

Hammond Fire and Rescue Squad members are hoping the banquet hall will be used for community events and private parties.

“I think it’s a good thing we can help them out and that it will benefit the community as a whole,” council member Howard Demick said.

The banquet hall will be located outside, but next to the fire hall at 300 Lake Street, Mr. Bass said. Once the final plans are drawn up, the squad is hoping to begin construction in the spring.

Mr. Bass said last month he hoped the project would be completed by the end of summer.

The fire department is still looking for donations for the hall. To donate, contact 324-6666.
