MASSENA – Mr. Donald E. Campbell, 87, of State Route 56, passed away early Friday morning, January 17, 2014 at Massena Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since Tuesday.

Don was born January 14, 1927 in Potsdam, the son of the late Samuel and Marion E. Dove Campbell and graduated from Norfolk High School. He was a Seaman First Class in the US Navy, serving from 1944 until his honorable discharge in 1946. On Mary 24, 1947, he married Winifred “Winnie” Patraw at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Michael Jarecki, officiating.

Don worked for many years at Alcoa, retiring in 1982 as a shift supervisor in the Wire, Rod and Bar Department. He was a member of the Alcoa 25-Year Club, the Raymondville Golf and Country Club, and played baseball for the Raymondville Rovers for many years. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, having wintered in Phoenix, Arizona. When they traveled, he gained many new friendships and stayed in touch with many of them through emails. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Winnie; two daughters and their husbands, Carole Ann and Michael Szeliga of Rainbow Lake, New York and Lori Jean and Terry Hutt of Columbia Tennessee; 4 grandchildren, Jennifer Szeliga Donaldson, Matthew Szeliga, Aaron Hutt, and Terrry Hutt, Jr; and a great grandson, Brennan.

Don was predeceased by an infant daughter, Donna Jean on September 17, 1954.

Friends may call Sunday 1-3 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where a closing prayer will be offered at 3:00 PM. Burial will be held at the convience of the family in Raymondville Cemetery.
