Border patrol: Canadian man walked across the frozen St. Lawrence River to enter the U.S.

WELLESLEY ISLAND — A convicted criminal from Ontario walked across the frozen St. Lawrence River to enter the U.S. illegally Tuesday, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Border Patrol agents caught the unidentified 44-year-old Canadian about 10 p.m. Tuesday walking along a road on Wellesley Island.

Wearing a wet suit under his clothes and carrying an inflatable raft in case he fell through the ice, the man navigated frozen portions of the Lake of the Isles to sneak across the border, agents said. Agents would not release the man’s name but said he previously was convicted of theft in Canada.

CBP spokesman Matthew Bitterman said the agents were on routine patrol when they encountered the man. “A lot of people don’t realize the danger they’re putting themselves in,” he said. “It was at night, and no one could’ve seen if he’d fallen through the ice.”

The man was returned to Canada and has been barred from entering the United States for five years.
