Antwerp man charged with illegally firing gunshots

ANTWERP — Marcus P. McGivney, 28, of 6 Van Buren St., was charged by state police with a felony early Friday for allegedly firing gunshots illegally outside his residence.

The gunshots were reported by Mr. McGivney’s neighbor in the village about 6 p.m., according to police. Police said Mr. McGivney fired multiple rounds of shots outside his house, about 85 feet from the closest neighboring residence. Under state law, residents who discharge firearms outside their homes must be at least 500 feet away from the closest neighboring residence. Police did not disclose what type of weapon was used or why the suspect fired shots.

Mr. McGivney was charged with illegal discharge of a firearm, second-degree obstruction of governmental administration and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned Friday afternoon in Antwerp Town Court and taken to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building, Watertown, on $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond. On Saturday morning, police did not know whether he had been released.
