Valentine’s Day dance in Heuvelton designed to raise money for bullying awareness

HEUVELTON — Hoping to make Valentine’s Day more than just an occasion for lovers, the Amvets Post 1997 Ladies Auxiliary is hosting a dance from 8 p.m. to midnight to raise money for bullying prevention.

“I thought we should do something to get more awareness [about bullying] out there,” Amvets Ladies Auxiliary member Robin E. Chambers said.

The dance will feature music from the 1950s and 1960s and will have a live performance by The Charleton Brothers band.

Officially known as “Spread the Love and Stomp Out Bullying,” the dance will be a “sock hop,” Mrs. Chambers said, as a throwback to the days of high school dances where teens would tear up the floor in their socks.

Dressing up for the dance is encouraged, Mrs. Chambers said, with prizes going to whoever has the most authentic 1950s attire.

“People can dress up with the poodle skirts and the guys with their leather jackets,” Mrs. Chambers said, adding that it will make for a special and unusual date night.

There will also be a 50-50 raffle, dance contest, silent auction and door prizes.

Mrs. Chambers said the dance will be held at the Amvets post, 107 State St.

Admission to the dance is a $3 donation per person or $5 for couples. Refreshments will be served.

Mrs. Chambers said the money will be split between the Heuvelton Leo Club’s anti-bullying efforts and the Amvets Child Welfare Program.
